Standing Strong Fitness Program for Osteoporosis

The STANDING STRONG Fitness Program is an 8-week research-based exercise program, developed by Physiotherapists. This program provides 2 guided exercise sessions/week, setting out to challenge participants in a variety of ways, targeting strength, fitness, balance, posture, and spinal health.

This program is appropriate for independently mobile older adults, including those who have been recently diagnosed with osteopenia or early osteoporosis, post-menopausal women, and those looking to start or return to an exercise routine. There is no age limit!

What to Expect and What You'll Need 

  • Schedule 2x per week to complete the exercises
  • We'll guide you through a moderate intensity exercise program
  • You won't need a lot of equipment to get started, just a safe space, a chair, some free weights or resistance bands, and a mat

This Program is Right for You if:

  1. You live independently in the community in your own home, condo or apartment. 
  2. You do not rely on a walking aid (I.e. a walker). 
  3. You are interested in becoming stronger & more fit!
  4. You’ve been advised to exercise regularly AND you’ve been cleared for exercise by your health care provider. 
  5. You're looking for a safe, guided, research-based program.
  6. You do not have any significant pain or limitations regarding exercise. 
  7. You may have a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis (I.e. thinning bone/low bone mineral density). 
  8. You do NOT have any acute or recent fractures/broken bones, injuries, or surgeries. 
  9. You do NOT have any unmanaged health concerns.
  10. You do NOT have frequent falls or loss of balance.
  11. You do NOT have chest pain/angina during exercise.
  12. You do NOT have severe weakness on one side of your body. 
  13. You do NOT have any severe bony/postural deformities preventing you from safely exercising.
